With the summer holidays now well begun I’m finally feeling a little more positive about looking ahead and making plans for September at the studio.
The challenges of the last several months have been many and varied but I’m keeping everything crossed 🤞 that I will be opening up a bit more again in September. I have opened up my studio membership for people to join since May but have until now not actively promoted anything at the studio as I wasn’t confident that we weren’t going to again be faced with having to navigate another lockdown. However, as I sit in the sun of summer with my daughter playing with a neighbour, I’m feeling more positive and have begun to seriously plan workshops and classes from September.
I’ve changed a lot about the way I work at the studio. I’ve changed my regular classes into membership sessions to give people more flexibility to enjoy clay making. The sessions can be booked online through my website to make it more convenient and easy to plan anytime rather than having to wait for a chat with me (it also means less admin for me which is great 😁). I’ve created a specific beginners hand building course which follows the same format as previously covering all the basics of hand building in clay. It’s 10 weekly sessions on Thursday mornings 10-12pm at the studio in Fenstanton, Cambs and costs £165. Starting on the 16th September it’s perfect for anyone wanting to take up a new hobby and learn all the basics of making in clay and once people have completed this they will be able to join the membership.
For the studio membership there are 2 hour sessions 6 days a week (so far!) during which you have access to all the tools and materials in the studio. The membership also includes firing for your makes. Alongside all the practical aspects it includes being part of an amazing community of like-minded makers who love clay, the chance to join in a monthly clay chat on zoom to just talk anything to do with clay as well as access to lots of videos and resources in a members hub area.
I’ve now filled in even more of the programme including technical Saturday and specialist raku workshops each month. These are workshops that cover a particular aspect of making in clay or to make something specific. I will also be introducing a weekend workshop experience to make a larger build for the garden. (Specific dates and details are at the end of this blog.)
Alongside all this at the studio I will also be online with my Hand Building Academy membership and holding my zoom challenge classes for intermediate makers. The zoom classes proved a great success last term and I had great fun teaching them. Each 40 minute session covers a new topic like advanced building techniques or mixing clays or clay sketching and more. During the zoom call I share lots of information and demonstrate a technique for you to try at home during the week. There’s the a WhatsApp group where everyone shares how they get on, what they enjoyed and what they struggled with. The 10 weekly sessions are recorded and shared with all the participants so you can catch up on any missed weeks with ease. These are at 7pm on Wednesday evenings. They’ll start from the 15th September and are £60.
I’m also planning to continue to build my range of video courses as I love the idea of being able to help more people to build their making online and I’m now a lot more comfortable in front of the camera 😁 My YouTube channel will continue too so if there’s something you’d like to know more about please do get in touch.
